OCTOBER 2008

CRUSH'S TOP TEN AND TASTINGS

Last month we launched new tasting events that give you an opportunity to taste all of these wines in an informal setting where you can also meet the wine agents and place orders for any of the wines that you'd like to enjoy later at home.

The next tasting takes place on Wednesday, October 8th at Crush, beginning at 6:30 pm. Cost is $35 per person.

To book a spot please call Carla Mundwiler at 416-977-1234 or send her an email: privatedining@crushwinebar.com

And in case you can't make it to the tasting, remember that these wines are also featured on our wine list, either by the glass, in flights or simply by the bottle.

Wine course and brown bag tastings. In addition to our Top Ten tastings this fall we're also offering an Introduction to Wine course and monthly brown bag tastings. For details, see the front page of our website www.crushwinebar.com or you can also download a copy of the program.

Now here are October's Top Ten, selected by Jamieson, Eric, and Marlise.

1. Pinot Grigio ‘Terre Di Chieti’, Crea Vini ’07 Abruzzo, Italy
This is a clean, honest refreshing white wine.  Classic trattoria wine to be served by the flask. $13.00 Tre Amici Imports www.treamiciwines.com

2. Riesling ‘Dolomite’, Niagara Escarpment, Cave Spring ’07
This wine is named for layers of dolomitic limestone unique to the Niagara Escarpment. Through the forces of erosion, these rock strats have come to enrich the soils of the escarpment's benchlands. Originating entirely from selected vineyards along these gentle slopes, this Riesling bears the mark of its origins, showing flavours of citrus, green apple and peach pit; notes of white pepper, fresh herbs and anise persist long onto the finish. $15.95 The Vine Wine Agency www.robgroh.com

3. ‘La Baronne’, Chateau La Baronne '06 VdP Hauterive, France
Oenologist Telmo Rodríguez, formerly of Remelluri in Rioja, is now resurrecting great vineyards throughout Spain.  Here in Toro, he has crafted a tempranillo which is juicy and straightforward. The sort of taverna wine to be served by the pint. $19.95 The Vine Wine Agency www.robgroh.com

4. Soave, Azienda Agricola Prà ’07 Veneto, Italy
100% Garganega, is a pure expression of varietal - fresh, floral, mineral. Clearly competition for top quality village Chablis. $22.95 The Vine Wine Agency www.robgroh.com

5. Merlot, Tin Roof ’05 California, U.S.A.
A classic plush texture and sumptuous plum flavours make this merlot both delicious on its own as well as  a versatile food wine. $17.95 The Vine Wine Agency www.robgroh.com

6. Aglianico ‘Beneventano’, Crea Vini ’06 Abruzzo, Italy
Easy-peasy juicy red. To be enjoyed by the gallon. $13.00 Tre Amici Imports www.treamiciwines.com

7. Lagrein, Peter Zemmer ’06 Alto Adige, italy
Lagrein is an interesting, mouthfilling Italian variety found in
Trentino-Alto-Adige.  It has a flavour of sour plums with a touch of
grass and bitter cherries, some black chocolate richness and a deep,
dark colour.  If you like other north-eastern Italian reds like Refosco and Teroldego, you will like Lagrein.$22.95 3050 Wine Imports www.3050imports.com

8. Malbec, Viña Amalia ’06 Mendoza, Argentina
This wine is made from 30 year old vines. The wine has a very strong and complex bouquet, with notes of acacia and honey aromas, and fragrances of dried fruits and hazelnut.  The ’02 was an exceptional vintage. $19.95 Tre Amici Imports www.treamiciwines.com

9. Barbera D’Asti ‘Nobbio’, Roberto Ferraris ‘06
Roberto Ferraris's Nobbio Barbera D'Asti is one of the more interesting (and challenging) Barbera wines made in the Astigiano. He doesn't resort to small oak barrels to gain nuance or tone, and as a result the wine's tight weave and terrific complexity all derive from the grapes, and make for a most impressive display. $27.95 3050 Wine Imports www.3050imports.com

10. Barbaresco ‘Rabaja’, Castello Di Verduno ‘00
Rabaja is one of the most prized vineyard in Barbaresco. You would be hard pressed to find a more pure traditional expression of nebbiolo.  From a monumental vintage, this red constantly changes in glass going from dusty rose petals to bitter chocolate, and finally finishing with kirsh-soaked leather.  Taste and compare with above. $69.95 3050 Wine Imports www.3050imports.com
