JAMIE AND ERIC'S TOP 10 PICKS FOR MAY
Oenologist Telmo Rodríguez, formerly of Remelluri in Rioja, is now resurrecting great vineyards all throughout Spain but this week he was at Crush to talk about his wines. We've selected five Telomo Rodriguez wines from five different regions of Spain to lead off this month's top picks.
| 1. |
2007 Rueda Verdejo/Sauvignon Blanc ’Basa’, Telmo Rodriguez (Toro, Spain)
First up is a Rueda, a blend of Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc and Viura. A bright and fresh white that is like having lime sorbet. $15.95 Lifford Wine Agency 416.440.4101
|
| 2. |
2006 Toro ‘Dehesa Gago’, Telmo Rodriguez (Toro, Spain)
Telmo Rodríguez’s second entry is from the town of Toro which is experiencing its own renaissance recently. 100% Tinto de Toro, (the local name for Tempranillo), it is rich and concentrated, tipping the scales at 15% alcohol. Like a blueberry and cherry coulis. $19.95 Lifford Wine Agency 416.440.4101
|
| 3. |
2006 Alicante Tinto Joven ‘Al Muvedre’, Telmo Rodriguez (Alicante, Spain)
From the vineyards around the beautiful town of Alicante. Medium weight with loads of juicy red fruit. This is the wine you would be served in a taverna by the pint. $13.95 Lifford Wine Agency 416.440.4101
|
| 4. |
2005 Rioja ‘Lanzaga’, Telmo Rodriguez (Rioja, Spain)
A wine from the eastern part of Rioja where vineyards meet old olive groves. Beautiful notes of bitter chocolate, tobacco , loose leaf tea and black pepper. $32.95 Lifford Wine Agency 416.440.4101
|
| 5. |
2004 Ribera del Duero Crianza M2 Matallana, Telmo Rodriguez (Ribera del Duero, Spain)
Blistering red from Central Spain. Heightened blackberry and vanilla notes dominate. One for the cellar. $38.95 Lifford Wine Agency 416.440.4101
|
| 6. |
2007 Riesling ‘Sketches’, Tawse (Niagara)
Tawse Riesling have always been among our favourite whites from Ontario. Pure Riesling showing a great mix of minerality and citrus.
|
| 7. |
2006 Muscat Dry, Cantina di Venosa (Basilicata, Italy)
Not a likely source for quality Muscat but this wine really delivers. Aromatic white with loads of rose petal, perfume and lychee notes. $17.95 3050 Wine Imports 416.820.9333
|
| 8. |
2007 Côtes de Provence Rosé ‘Le Fils d’Ariane’, Domaine des Peirecèdes (Provence, France)
We tried this rosé on the weekend and loved it. The colour is quite light but the palate is full and bright. Great value $13.95 CSPC# 950733
